Welcome to the Fourth Quarter issue of the Gray's Woods Neighborhood Association newsletter! We hope you're enjoying the changing seasons and staying connected with our community. In this issue, we have updates on upcoming events, neighborhood projects, and ways you can get involved to help make Gray's Woods an even better place to live.

As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to attend our next local meeting on March 11th 2025, where we'll discuss important neighborhood topics and hear from our community members.

Community Updates

Upcoming Events

  • The city of Des Moines Prescribed Burning will start in October.  Weather permitting, they will be burning Grandview Park 3230 Easton Blvd and Four Mile Creek Open Space @ E 35th St and E Sheridan Ave.  For more information, visit dmparks.org under the Natural resources management practices.

Neighborhood Projects

  • The new Four Mile Mountain Bike Park is well underway.  If you have not seen it yet, check out the video.

  • Grays Woods Rehab is still working to secure financing for their expansion.

 

Safety Tips

  • Home Security Tips: Ensure all doors and windows are locked, even when you’re at home. Consider installing motion-sensor lights around your property for added safety.

  • Street Safety: Please remember to observe the speed limit and watch out for children playing in the neighborhood.

Environmental Awareness

This month, we're focusing on sustainable gardening. Here are a few tips to prepare your garden for winter while keeping it eco-friendly:

  • Use mulch: Adding mulch to your garden beds helps protect the soil and retain moisture.

  • Compost yard waste: Instead of bagging up leaves, consider composting them for natural garden fertilizer.

  • Plant native species: They require less water and provide habitat for local wildlife.

Gray's Woods Recipes

Ham Balls Recipe
1 pound ground ham
2 pounds ground pork
1 pound ground beef
4 eggs
2 sleeves crushed graham crackers
1 - 8oz can pineapple juice

Mix ingredients together, form into balls, and cook at 350 degrees for about an hour or until reaching 160 degrees internal temperature.

Brown Sugar Glaze:
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon dry mustard
3/4 cup cider vinegar
3/4 cup pineapple juice

Mix together, dissolve the sugar, bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes. Apply to ham balls.
